The Department of Water Affair’s Hydro department confirmed the may 07th flood was actually 1 in 200 year one.

The Gamtoos Water Board said about 126 million cubic meters of water x 6.6 were recorded in the Kouga Dam.

Rainfall driven by an intense cut-off low-pressure system, was measured at 110 mm to 300 mm in just 24 hours.

Some surrounding catchment areas received about 300 mm in between 24 to 48 hours.

Water has also spilled over the dam wall, which is at  at 100.67% full.

The dam and canal system supply water to the Gamtoos Valley for irrigation and to the Kouga Municipality and Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Towns supplied by the dam, include Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, and Humansdorp.
