Between 10 and 40 people were struck by lightning in Mathibestad, North of Pretoria, on Saturday, the 03rd January 2026.
According to the Moretele Local Municipality, 2 people died, as a result.
Mothupi Malebye, Spokesperson of Moretele, said in a statement, emergency services and paramedics arrived on the scene quickly to provide life-saving interventions.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued warned against severe thunderstorms at Level 5 for Gauteng, eastern Free State, eastern North West, western Limpopo and the Mpumalanga highveld.
Similar but lesser conditions are expected in eastern Northern Cape, western Free State, North West, western KZN and along the escarpment of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
