About 24 people were hospitalized as a result of what residents are calling a “tornado” that swept through parts of Randfontein on Wednesday, around lunchtime.
The strong winds and storm conditions left extensive damage to infrastructure in Randfontein and Westonaria.
The storm damaged an estimated 400 homes in Randfontein, Toekies, Mphakathi Mall and neighbouring flats.
William Matsheke, Executive Mayor of Rand West City Local Municipality and Panyaza Lesufi, Premier of Gauteng, as well as other Councillors in the area, visited the disaster-stricken area at Greenfield Family Unit, Umphakathi Mall and some homes in Toekomsrus.
They also met with affected communities.
