About 40 people died in an earthquake, off the coast of Maasim, Sarangani, Mindanao, in the Phillipines, on Tuesday morning.

Authorities said about 134 were injured and 12 were missing on Tuesday.

The quake measured at 7,8, led to a collapse of buildings, structural cracks, and severe fire outbreaks (such as the destruction of the Davao Convention and Trade Center) in Sarangani, General Santos, and nearby areas.

Over 3.2 million learners were affected.

Classes remain suspended in over 6,200 public and private schools as assessments continue.

The Philippine Red Cross says it deployed emergency medical teams, ambulances, food trucks, and water tankers to support displaced families.

Evacuations were triggered following an  offshore tremor, which triggered a tsunami alert across nine provinces.
