Six truck drivers were arrested on Saturday, after they were found with suspected stolen coal on the N2 Highway, in Pongola on Saturday, 11 January 2025.

The Police (SAPS) said in a statement, officers who are part of Operation Vala Umgodi, gathered intelligence about trucks which were travelling from Witbank to an unnamed destination in Richards Bay.
The trucks were carrying coal which was allegedly stolen in Witbank.

The suspects, aged between 38 and 50 years,  were due to appear in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 January 2025.

A team of Operation Vala Umgodi in Gauteng,  arrested fourteen illegal immigrants who are also suspected to be illegal miners in Daveyton on Wednesday, the 08 January 2025.

During the operation police confiscated tools that are used for illegal mining (19 X pendukas, 10 X motors, 215 X Iron balls and 4 X generators).

The police said their operation continued on Sunday, the 12 January 2025, at Harry Gwala Informal Settlement in Actonville, Ekurhuleni District, where explosives were found. They are 100 X meters of Detonating Cord; 5 X Carmex Connector Capped Fuses and 12 (3/4) X Superpower 90 Blasting Cartridges.
