The Geminids also known as meteor showers, are visible to sky-gazers in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
They are most active from the 4th until the 20th December, peaking around the 14 December.
According to Kos Coronaios and Tim Cooper, of the Astronomical Society of Southern Africa, at least two meteor showers are active this month – the Geminids and the Puppid-Velids.
“The Geminids are the debris stream from minor planet 3200 Phaethon, which may be an example of an extinct comet. Despite being a northern hemisphere shower the Geminids produce a reliable display each year, and are usually the strongest meteor activity of the year even in the southern hemisphere’ said Coronaios and Cooper.
This shower builds to maximum activity around 10 p.m. local time.
Best time to view in South Africa: After Midnight of the Saturday 13th and Sunday,14th December.
