Researchers at the Two Oceans Aquarium are excited to have released Kai, a Loggerhead Turtle, to the ocean, after a six -year walk to recovery.

Kai weighed only 53grams, when he was rescued in October 2020.

Then, he had severe buoyancy challenges caused by uneven lung development and recurring infections.

But through the years, he recovered miraculously, under the supervision of veterinary care, physiotherapy, and innovative custom buoyancy devices, at the Turtle Conservation Centre.

He was released six years later, at De Hoop Marine Protected Area, on the 14 May 2026.

Researchers said “as soon as the waves touched his flippers, Kai made his way back into the ocean.”

The Aquarium thanked the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation for adopting Kai and CapeNature for their continued support.
