At least five municipalities were slapped with default orders, by the energy regulator (NERSA), on Sunday.
This happened at a tribunal meeting, set to tackle non-compliance.
Recipients are the Saldanha Bay, Rustenburg, Ekurhuleni, Kareeberg and Lephalale Local Municipalities.
The energy regulator (NERSA) said licensees issued with orders, breached its conditions and National Rationalised Specifications (NRS) Standards.
Charles Hlebela, Spokesperson of the energy regulator, said this follows details of information from recently held audits, which revealed the failure to ring-fence electricity distribution businesses, non-payment of bulk electricity accounts; the absence or non-implementation of maintenance plans and the non-compliance with quality of supply and quality of service standards.
More shortcomings include the need to comply with occupational health and safety requirements; as well as the implementation of supply interruptions and outages in a manner inconsistent with regulatory standards and licence conditions.
The matters for Greater Taung Local Municipality, Phokwane Local Municipality and Ndlambe Local Municipality were, at the request of NERSA, removed from the Tribunal Roll.
NERSA also warned that non- compliance with tribunal directives may result in escalation to adjudication, to a R2 million per day fine, implementable, for each day of a contravention.
