Some parts of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality are still in the dark, following the collapse of two 132kV transmission towers in the Western Supply Area, on Thursday, the 22nd January 2026.

Already fragile from vandalism and theft, the towers were worsened by gale force winds, on the 22 January 2026, and totally collapsed.

Affected areas are Summerstrand, Walmer, South End, Greenbushes Industrial Area, Tembani, Seaview, Portions of Kabega, Chelsea, Rowallan Park, Bridgemead, Parsons Vlei, Westering, Arlington, Walmer Heights, Lovemore Heights and Lovemore Park, Lorraine, including Fairview, Sherwood and surrounding areas.

A Joint Operations Centre (JOC) was established to coordinate Electricity and Energy, Disaster Management, Safety and Security.

The Municipality said it has revised the estimated full restoration period from an initial 14 days to approximately 10 days.

“Residents are further assured that the collapsed lattice towers are being replaced with vandal-resistant monopole structures, which will strengthen the network, reduce vulnerability to theft and vandalism, and improve long-term reliability.”
