Researchers are discussing ways to tackle water losses and improve infrastructure at an Imbizo hosted by the University of South Africa (UNISA).

The event is held in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation, Johannesburg Water, the Water Research Commission and Rand Water.

It is attended by the water fraternity, including water boards, civil society, researchers and academia.

Themed “Reimagining a Water-Secure South Africa” the event also highlighted research by students, through posters and presentations.

The Imbizo is also expected to iron out the role of academia in addressing South Africa’s water challenges, provide research-driven solutions, innovation and technical expertise to support government and municipalities in improving water security, infrastructure management and water quality.

Speaking on Tuesday, David Mahlobo, Deputy Minister, said the event coincides with the National Water Month campaign, aimed at heightening the significance and value of water, as well as the urgency to conserve it.

Mahlobo said “this Imbizo is not just another gathering, but a critical national intervention and a platform for truth, solutions and decisive action at a time when the country faces a pivotal moment in its water and sanitation sector.”
