City Power appealed to residents of Shalazile informal settlement, near City Deep, to speak up about the murder of its security officer (Thulasizwe Gasa), over the weekend.
The officer was protecting critical electricity infrastructure at the Shalazile Microgrid Plant, when he was shot three times, about 30 metres from the Shalazile Microgrid Plant.
He was found lying on a footpath between the shacks.
Charles Tlouane, Acting City Power Chief Executive Officer, said the incident is both heartbreaking and unacceptable.
“This is an unnecessary, tragic loss of life. A security officer was brutally killed while carrying out his duties to protect essential infrastructure that serves our communities. We condemn this criminal act in the strongest possible terms, and appeal to the police to move with speed to find the perpetrators” said Tlouane.
He also said this killing highlights the extreme risks faced by personnel working to safeguard the electricity supply in vulnerable and high-risk areas.
