The Elandskloof dam in Villiersdorp is running low.
Authorities said preliminary investigations point to a leak, which has led to lesser water in the dam, despite recent heavy rains.
A message to residents, from the office of the town’s manager, said the cause of the leak might be recent rains and flood damage.
Moreover, the remaining water in the dam has begun mixing with sand, resulting in murky, discoloured water.
As a result, the Municipality said it would shut down water supply altogether to fix the leak, and opt for supplying water via tankers to residents on Thursday.
The Clanwilliam Dam is also currently contaminated by debris (tree stumps, branches, leaves, and ash from fires), washed into the dam by heavy rains.
Anthony Mlata, the Spokesperson of the Cederberg Municipality, said the Department of Water and Sanitation, is currently clearing the debris from the dam.
Moreover, test results confirm water from the dam is not safe for human consumption without proper treatment.
He further urged residents to avoid using water from the dam, unless boiled.
