Construction a solar power plant at Lethabo Power Station has begun in the Free State.

Eskom Green announced this week that the project would cost R1.2 billion.

Once completed, the plant is expected to yield about 147 Gigawatts an hour (GWh) of electricity, to supply 60,000 households.

The project is also expected to provide jobs and skills to locals.

A delegation including Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa; Minister of Electricity and Energy, were on site on Wednesday to witness the milestone.

Others are Maqueen Letsoha–Mathae; Premier of Free State Province, Panyaza Lusufi; Premier of Gauteng Province, Jack Malindi; Executive Mayor of Metsimaholo, Peter Teixeira; Executive Mayor of the Midvaal Local Municipality, Mteto Nyati; Eskom’s Board Chairman, Dan Marokane; Eskom’s Group Chief Executive, Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Rivoningo Mnisi; Eskom Group Executive for Renewables, Karabo Rakgolela Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station General Manager and members of the Eskom Board.

Dan Marokane, Group Chief Executive Officer of Eskom, said “bringing this solar plant into the Lethabo Power Station site affirms our deliberate strategy to optimise existing assets while accelerating new lower-carbon generation capacity.”
