Nelson Mandela Bay

An 11kV circuit breaker tripped, at the Rosedale/Tamboville No. 1 Substation, causing an outage in Tamboville, KwaLanga and surrounding areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

This is as a result of heavy rains underway in the City.

The City also alerted residents to flooded roads, including corner of Roswell Gradwell and North Street, Mosel and Kariega.

The Graaff-Reinet Road and Channer, in Kariega, is also closed, as well as the Third Avenue Dip and Newton Park. 

The De Mist Canal is nearing capacity, with water flowing strongly. 

The Willow Dam is currently overflowing at Channer Street.

The dam outlet is flowing strongly and the affected area requires ongoing monitoring. 

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, especially after dark, as floodwaters across the roadway may be difficult to see.

The City also said it is monitoring the Jubilee Canal.

Flooded roads in Swartkops include Elephant Park, Wells Estate, Jijana Street, Wells Estate, Styhotyholweni Street, Wells Estate, Addo Road, Markman, Corner of Old Grahamstown Road and Addo Road, Swartkops and the Old Grahamstown Road, Swartkops.

Rain also caused damage to property, at a residence at St James Street, Extension 28, Bethelsdorp.

Household belongings were washed away and the electricity supply tripped, leaving the affected family without power.

The Gamtoos Water Board measured rainfall at various parts of the town, on Wednesday afternoon, at Krakeel hoek (55mm), Krakeel (30mm), Joubertina (25mm), Suurveld (35mm), Baviaanskloof (38mm) and Kleinrivier (80mm). 

Water levels of the Kouga dam were at 101.29%, around 16:30 pm and the Loerie dam was 105.81% full.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned against disruptive snow leading to icy roads, on Thursday, resulting in traffic disruptions, over the northern high-lying areas in the Eastern Cape.

Babalwa Lobishe, the Executive Mayor of the Bay, urged residents and motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads and avoid unnecessary travel where conditions may be unsafe.

She also said the Municipality has identified and prepared community halls to be used as shelters, across Gqeberha, Kariega and Despatch.

Kouga 

Several roads closed in Kouga are the Felix Street in Humansdorp, the R102 between Mondplaas and Steel Bridge, the R102 past the Ferry Turn-off towards Thornhill, the Gravel Road along the Gamtoos River.

The Municipality urged motorists to avoid streets where water levels are rising such as the Corner of Duine and Haring Street, Dolphin Drive, Ocean View, Apiesdraai, St Croix and the Gamtoos Mondplaas Turn-off on the R102.

The town’s emergency services remain on high alert and continue to assess conditions throughout affected areas.

The Municipality also appealed to residents to donate cooked meals, ready-made sandwiches, mattresses, blankets and hygiene packs.

Donations can be dropped off at any of the fire stations across the Kouga region.

Garden Route

The SAWS warned against continuing heavy rains at an Orange level 8 warning, into Thursday.

This is over the eastern parts of the Garden Route District Municipality in the Western Cape as well as the South Coast of the Eastern Cape up to East London.

About 20 roads were closed in the Garden Route, following Wednesday’s heavy downpours.

A secondary rock fall occurred on the N12 between Oudtshoorn and George.

The Calitzdorp Dam started spilling  over after Wednesday’s rain. The dam wall was overflowing across its full width, with a strong flow of water moving downstream. 

As a result, the Oudtshoorn Municipality urged residents to stay clear of rivers, low-water crossings and fast-flowing waterways.

The Bitou Municipality recorded multiple incidents across the town.

Flooding was reported at the Groot River Bridge and low-lying areas, the Kalanderkloof River was overflowing, affecting access routes towards the bridge. 

Rockfalls and a landslide were in the Western Pass, resulting in hazardous travel conditions. 

Emergency and road-clearing operations had to be suspended due to unsafe conditions.

The Municipality urged residents to remain indoors where possible, avoid flooded roads and bridges, and stay alert for falling trees, rockfalls, and other storm-related hazards.
