The 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting, got underway in Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, India, on Tuesday.

The meeting was chaired by Bhupender Yadav, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in India.

The meeting discussed sustainable climate action, circular economies, and green growth, afforestation and forest fire management.

Speaking at the meeting, Narend Singh, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF), said South Africa welcomes India’s emphasis on advancing climate resilience through people-centred and community-led adaptation built on traditional knowledge.

“Across the Global South, communities continue to experience increasingly severe climate impacts, including droughts, floods, heatwaves, biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and threats to livelihoods. Addressing these challenges requires approaches that place people at the centre of adaptation action, while recognising the value of local knowledge, indigenous practices and community innovation” said Singh.
