The 17-year-old grade 11 learner from Sitintile Secondary School in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, won the national South African Youth Water Prize with his project, which led him to the Stockholm round of the competition.
The Junior Water Prize honours students between the ages of 15-20, for developing innovative research solutions to major water challenges.
His project addresses barrier coatings for reducing microplastics and chemical leaching.
The Department of Water and Sanitation, said in an update, “Nkosi stepped forward with confidence and passion, delivering his innovative project to a panel, proudly showcasing the potential of South Africa’s young and vibrant minds.”
He is backed by a range of water organisations including AWSISA, Rand Water, Lepelle Water, uMngeni-uThukela, Magalies Water, WRC and BOCMA.
