About sixteen (16) people were arrested in Soweto, on Thursday evening, following looting overnight, at several foreign owned  shops.

Incidents were reported in Moroka, Dlamini, Protea Glen, Dobsonville, Rockville, Zola, Orlando, Jabulani and White City.

The department of Home Affairs in Germiston, east of Johannesburg, was set alight.

Similarly, three people were arrested during unrest at the Durban CBD and the South Beach area.

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, Spokesperson of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal said the three were arrested for breaking the leg of a South African protester.

Lieutenant General, Puleng Dimpane, Acting National Police Commissioner said police would persue violent disrupters in Soweto and Durban.

“The right to raise concerns and to protest does not give anyone the right to commit crime” she said.

Protesters earlier torched 10 vehicles in Soweto (Orlando West) and 14 in Durban.
