People who found the ball-like tiny substances on 2 of uMhlanga beaches, expressed concern about them.

Understandably, they are also still unknown by the Municipality.

Gugu Sisilana, Spokesperson of the eThekwini Municipality, said the solid particles are most likely fats, to have originated from food establishments.

Beach water samples and the “ball” shaped solid matter were collected for laboratory analysis.

“While findings indicate very low faecal contamination in water samples taken on 7 January 2025, at both the uMhlanga Main Beach and Bronze Beach, the source of the solid “ball” matter is being profiled to confirm its origin. Beach clean-up operations will commence to remove the “ball” shaped solid matter now that investigations have been carried out” said Sisilana.

As a result, beaches where the mysterious balls were collected, were opened on the 9th January 2025, after temporary closure by the City, while investigations got underway.

She also said the beaches were closed as a precautionary measure, pending an investigation from the City’s Scientific Services.

There were also rumors of a possible sewage spill on the beaches.

To this, the Municipality said people must stop spreading unverified information and urges the public and media to refrain from speculative reporting.
