Some residents of Durban took to social media to express concern about dry taps in some areas.

They were responding to the eThekwini Municipality’s notice about elevated levels of 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), affecting water supplied through the Wiggins Water Treatment Works.

MIB is a naturally occurring process, associated with increased levels of blue-green algae in surface water systems.

The City said despite the temporary changes in taste and odour, water remains safe for human consumption and continues to meet the required quality and safety standards.

The City also said it continues to work closely with bulk water supplier uMngeni-uThukela Water (UUW), to intensify water treatment processes and enhanced monitoring systems.
