In yet another incident- about 440 meters of critical medium-voltage copper cables were stolen, in the early hours of Monday morning.

City Power said the cables were stolen from the Anderson West distributor, making it the third incident since the start of July 2025.

Days before that, about 260m of cables were stolen from a service tunnel on Albert Street.

Three underground cables were stolen this weekend.

About 90% of power supply must still be restored to affected Marshall West, Anderson West, Main, Albert, Market, Fox and surrounding blocks all the way to Marshalltown.

Tshifularo Mashava, CEO of City Power, said “the sporadic targeting of our underground tunnel cables is not just theft, it is coordinated sabotage.  These attacks are designed to collapse Johannesburg’s energy backbone. We are facing an orchestrated attempt to reverse years of service delivery progress.”
