City Power has urged residents to use electricity wisely.
The call follows the addition of more load into the network, with Distributors from the Braamfontein Substation, to restore electricity to the area.
Customers were left in the dark, since Workers Day, when a fire broke out in an underground tunnel, near the double-decker section of the M1.
The fire damaged a 88kV cable linking Braamfontein and Fordsburg Substations.
The restoration of the network has been stretched to the maximum limit to accommodate as many customers as possible.
Charles Tlouane, Chief Operating Officer, of City Power, said “while this progress is a positive sign of our recovery plan, the work is not complete. We urge all customers to exercise extreme caution and use electricity sparingly to avoid overloading the network. Failure to do so at this stage may result in power trips that could set back restoration efforts.”
He also said “we now appeal to customers to play their part in ensuring that they keep consumption levels low, by switching off their geysers, pool pumps and other appliances especially during peak hours.”
This is as work of clearing debris from the affected tunnel, along with the task of examining the extent of the network damage is underway.
