City Power has cautioned against paying any technician or contractor for repairs or other network related work.

Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said “we have had several incidents where customers paid technicians thousands of rands for unauthorized reconnections, and unfortunately after finding out, we disconnected the power supply and removed our infrastructure. This left customers with a bigger financial burden of having to pay for reconnection and penalty fees in addition to their outstanding electricity bills.”

Mangena also said technicians soliciting money from residents, should be reported urgently. This includes repairs of the overhead or underground cables, a mini-substation, streetlights and other City Power equipment.

Mangena said Kensington, East of Johannesburg, reported incidents of being coerced to make payment by unscrupulous contractors.
