The Department of Water Affairs is calling for comments on Unconventional Gas Regulations.

Public comments are now open.

This is the second round of consultations on Unconventional Gas Regulations, on the regulations of fracking, coal bed methane, and underground coal gasification.

Comments are sent to the Department of Water and Sanitation because of its mandate to protect, manage, control, and develop water resources, and should guide regulations on activities of fracking.

The Department said the regulations will manage these activities as they have a possibility of contaminating water resources, particularly groundwater.

The Department formulated these regulations as mandated by the National Water Act.

For documents and more information, the public can send written submissions to Unconventionalgas@dws.gov.za by January 15, 2025.

For more information, please contact Chief Director: Water Use, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, Amet Muir at muira@dws.gov.za or Director Water Resource Regulation, Nosie Mazwi at mazwir@dws.gov.za
