Residents are urged to be cautious of an overflowing  Hazelmere dam, that is spilling into the uMdlothi River, in KwaZulu-Natal.

uMngeni-uThukela Water Board, said recent rains  have raised water levels in water bodies.

Communities living downstream of the river are urged to avoid getting too close to its banks as the increased volumes of water from the Dam will result in higher than normal levels in the Mdloti river.

Communities residing close to the banks of the Mdloti River are reminded that the overspill could pose a threat to public safety.

The public is therefore urged to stay away from the Mdloti River, not attempt to cross low-lying bridges and causeways, and safeguard any property, including livestock, which is close to the river bank.

The Hazelmere Dam wall was recently raised by 7 metres to increase its storage capacity and also improve water availability for the eThekwini Metro and the Ilembe District Municipality.
