The third Climate Change and Futures in Africa Conference Series in Windhoek, Namibia, started on Wednesday, the 29 October to 1 November 2025.

Themed “Risk in Time and Space,” the meeting has a special focus on Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), an approach expected to empower local communities to engage actively in risk assessment, decision-making and the development of adaptive strategies.

The conference, organized by the Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC,) was officially opened by Dr Elijah Ngurare, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia.

More than 100 experts in climate change are in attendance, as well as those in disaster risk reduction, policymakers, practitioners, and community based participatory research from around the world.

They are from Namibia, South Africa, Canada, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya, Algeria, Japan, Greece, and Germany.

The programme has featured interactive panel discussions, workshops, and breakout sessions designed to encourage dialogue and practical solutions to climate change and disaster risks across disciplines and regions.

Participants will also engage with case studies and research findings from Southern Africa and other climate vulnerable regions, offering critical perspectives on the real-world impacts of climate change.
