Zinzi Tom, whose brother is among miners trapped underground Stilfontein in the North West, is relieved the High Court ruled in favour of the rescue operation to commence soon.
The High Court ordered Mine Rescue Services (MRS), on Friday afternoon, to begin operations to rescue miners trapped illegally in Shafts 10 and 11 of the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine in Stilfontein.
Hundreds of miners are still underground, while more than 1,500 have resurfaced, the South African Police said in December 2024.
The court has ordered the State to finalize and send a Service Level Agreement and Letter of Appointment to Mine Rescue Services (MRS).
The Mining-Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) said this move by the Court, illustrates sanity has prevailed, although it is still
uncertain when operations would begin.
Magnificent Mndebele of MACUA, said the court also mandated the uninterrupted delivery of food, water, and medical aid to the trapped miners over the weekend.
Earthnews365 has sent questions to Harmony Gold, operators of the mine, for comment on this finding and MACUA’s plan to send drones to shafts.
