Rain brought about by a cut off low system, is expected to exit South Africa later on Friday.

Here is a summary of effects of rain this week.

Free State

The Caledon river is about 3 meters over its banks due to recent rains.

Old Mill Drift Guest Farm, took to social media to express gratitude for the rain, but said it comes with some challenges.

“Our farmers are the foundation of our town and employ many people… So if you see a farmer this weekend give them a hug or better yet…buy them a dop!” 

Rain continues in addition of the 40mm and 50mm recorded in Memel and surrounding farms, on Thursday night, according to Free State Tourism. 

As a result, the local Zamani Primary School, is closed on Friday, to protect children.

Arrive Alive and the Free State Department of Health VR Medical, reported multiple collisions in bad weather and slippery roads outside Bloemfontein. There were 3 accidents on the slippery N8 bridge, during a hailstorm.

Kwaggafontein

The road between Vreis to Ntwana is now open, and the bridge no longer flooded (information from #TheGuy).

KZN

As a result of heavy rains, Lake St. Lucia Mouth breached twice naturally.

The ISimangaliso Wetland Park, said the first natural opening of the estuary in the same area, was on the 14th of April 2022, the second was on the 10th of January 2025. 

The mouth remains open.

Flooded roads in KZN are Umgeni Springfield M19, the Umhlanga Interchange, the North Coast Road at briadene intersection, N3 West bound just before Westville Offramp, Malvern M7 Eastbound, M4 Riverside (Right Lane).
Motorists are advised to reduce speed or use alternative routes (information from Durban Traffic).

Modimolle

Modimolle Mookgophong local municipality has cautioned motorists that due to heavy rainfall, most roads are not accessible, and therefore, some services are postponed , such as refuse collection.
