Severe thunderstorms and lightning damaged emergency lines of several Municipal fire stations in eThekwini, on Friday evening.
As a result, the eThekwini Municipality said this hamper on critical communication infrastructure, means the Fire Services cannot be reached.
Technical teams are working with urgency to identify and resolve the fault.
Friday’s storm also caused a widespread power outage and damaged infrastructure throughout the region.
Chris Pappas, Mayor of uMngeni Municipality, said his team is assessing the extent of the damage in that part of the Region.
The storm caused some damage in Mpophomeni.
Pappas said “the most badly affected homes are the oldest ones in Mpophomeni, those that still have asbestos roofs.
Many of these homes are occupied by elderly residents, who also look after their grandchildren.”
He also said the Municipality is sourcing the right material to try and assist.
The DA in uMngeni, also appealed to the community to assist by donating canned foods, maize meal, rice, tea, sugar, powdered or long life milk,as well as blankets for both children and adults.
