The City of eThekwini said it will enter into a tri-party agreement with Plentify and Agence Francaise de Development (AFD) for a Smart Solar Project.
This follows a thumbs up from its Economic Development and Planning Committee (ECOD) on 21 May 2025.
Through the Smart Solar Project, the City is expected to install 280 Hotbots and Solarbots across the Municipal area as a pilot project, focusing on Municipal facilities, low-income households and vulnerable households.
The project leverages Plentify’s cutting edge technology to optimise household energy consumption ensuring cleaner, cheaper and more reliable electricity.
In addition, as part of its strategy to bolster visitor numbers, Gugu Sisilana, the City’s Spokesperson, said the ReSURGEnce Global Conference will be hosted in Durban from 22 to 27 July.
The ReSURGEnce Global Conference is an international business and economic development programme organised and owned by the New York Christian Times.
Between 8,000 to 10,000 delegates from various countries are expected to attend, including the United States, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom and the Caribbean.
The event is expected to inject more than R90 million and contribute over R130 million to the GDP to eThekwini.
Sisilana also said the ECOD gave permission to enter into a three- year agreement with Metro FM, to host its Music Awards, securing about R9.5 million, in media collateral and host city partnership benefits.
