Parts of Gauteng have no electricity, but it’s not due to loadshedding.
Eskom said on Friday, its technicians are attending to an outage caused by a fault at the Vuka substation affecting customers in most parts of Winterveld.
Similarly a transformer supplying electricity to customers in Moletsane, in Soweto, was reportedly overloading, and kept tripping.
There were several supply interruptions on Friday, affecting areas in Beverley, Craigavon, Fourways, Lonehill, Magaliessig, Maroeladal, Palmlands AH and Witkoppen.
Eskom also said it is busy with planned maintenance in parts of Soweto.
But Daphne Mokwena, Eskom’s Spokesperson, said the power utility’s power system is stable against two cold fronts in most parts of the country this week.
She said this year’s Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF), is better than last year’s by a margin (~0.1%), now at 28.50%, compared to last year’s 28.56%.
This week’s unplanned outages, ending on the 22nd May 2025, were at 14,095MW.
She also said planned maintenance has decreased, as Winter sets in, averaging 4, 482MW this week (16 to 22 May 2025).
The Open-Cycle Gas Turbine (OCGT) load factor decreased to 7.65% this week, compared to 10.94% in the previous week (9 to 15 May 2025).
In addition, a total of 5,760MW of generation capacity is expected to return to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday, 26 May 2025, to further stabilise the grid.
