eThekwini Municipality has announced the reopening of the Buffelsdraai landfill site in two phases, as from the 01st of April 2025.
The site was temporarily closed in July 2023, after 18 waste pickers were shot and 1 left for dead.
Upon reopening, it will accommodate garden refuse, builders’ rubble and sand cover material. The second phase, scheduled to open a month later, on the 01st May 2025, will allocate the disposal of domestic waste.
The City said this decision follows extensive rehabilitation and safety improvement projects undertaken at the site.
Areas to use the site, are Osindisweni, Zwelisha and others, neighbouring Verulam.
The City said waste pickers were trained ahead of the official launch of the site, by the Mayor, on Thursday, the 13th March 2025.
