The building engulfed by a huge cloud of smoke in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro on Tuesday morning, is a heritage icon- Richly House.

Richly House on Cape Road, was built in 1906.

The building was reused as a nursing home, brothel, boarding house, and most recently a restaurant.

Speaking about the incident, Terri Stander, Councillor of Ward 5, where the building is situated, took to social media on Tuesday, saying “I will be asking ECPHRA and the MBHT to investigate the circumstances surrounding the loss of this heritage icon, and to approach their network of experts to ascertain whether there is any way to salvage parts of the building.”

She also said early indications point to an “electrical” start to the fire.
