Twelve Shops were gutted by a fire in Jeppe Street, in the Johannesburg CBD on Sunday afternoon.
The City of Johannesburg said its EMS (Emergency Services) firefighters responded to a structural fire at the corner of Jeppe and Goud Street in Joubert Park.
Upon speedy arrival, the City said its crews found the fire had destroyed twelve small shops in the area.
No injuries and fatalities were reported.
Xolile Khumalo, Spokesperson of the City’s EMS, said in a statement on Sunday evening, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
“EMS urges all warehouse and shop owners to exercise caution and ensure that all electrical appliances are turned off after use” said Khumalo.
In Pretoria, a fire destroyed cars in a scrapyard in Booysens, Pretoria West.
The City of Tshwane said despite deploying its grassfire unit and a rapid intervention unit from Phillip Nel Park fire station, just after 3pm this afternoon, several cars burnt, and fortunately, the fire was extinguished just after 16:30.
The City took the opportunity to caution residents to report fires posing a danger to settlements, vegetation and veld fires.
In a statement, the City said unapproved controlled burning must never be carried out, and also said no controlled burns will be allowed during this time.
