The first of its kind pup born on the East London coast on Thursday, was clubbed to death, two days later.
Conservationist, Div de Villiers, took to social media to explain details surrounding the tragic death of the pup.
He said a female Southern Elephant Seal gave birth to a pup on Friday, the first ever recorded event on the East London coast.
“I checked on how they were doing with Kevin and Mary Cole of the East London Museum on Saturday.
The pup had fallen off the little wall, but was reunited with mom.”
Kevin then later notified him that the pup had died.
The incident has raised concerns about security in the area. In just a few weeks, there were several incidents including muggings, theft and dog hunting.
Kevin Cole, Principal Natural Scientist, at the East London Museum, said to Earthnews365, the police are investigating two suspects for the incident.
He also said “a lot more can be done by the Buffalo City Metro Municipality to protect
people and animals in the Nahoon Point Nature Reserve, East London.”
The Tidy Towns Buffalo City Community have condemned the incident, calling it senseless.
In a statement the organisation also expressed its devastation and outrage at the incident.
