A heatwave has begun in Gauteng, Limpopo, Free State, Mpumalanga, North West, some parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts the wave will end on Monday.

During this time, temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees celsius, especially in the Lowveld areas, Limpopo Valley and Western Bushveld.

The SAWS has launched a 72-hour Enthalpy Comfort Index Forecasting Tool, to support farmers and small poultry managers to keep animals cool.

Some tips shared by SAWS, regarding stressed poultry as a result of the heat, include remaining crouched on the floor, slow, wobbly movement, drinking and eating more water and food than normal, panting faster than normal and changes in skin colour.

Useful tips for people include staying away from the sun between 12 and 3pm, drink more water, wear light and loose clothes and avoid strenuous activities, especially in the heat.
