The KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance (Cogta) encouraged motorists and visitors from KZN intending to cross into Lesotho,  to suspend trips until the route is declared safe.

This is due to heavy snowfall on the Lesotho side of the Pass.

Temperatures have also plummeted significantly, particularly in areas surrounding the Drakensberg.

In addition, Thulasizwe Buthelezi, KZN COGTA MEC, said a severe storm swept through the uMlalazi Local Municipality, uprooting trees and damaging residential roofs, on Thursday afternoon.

Buthelezi also said emergency response teams are on the ground, assessing the extent of the damage.

“We appeal to our communities to exercise extreme caution as they keep warm. If you are using braziers or generators, ensure they are operated safely and in well-ventilated spaces to avoid tragedy. Most importantly, protect our children keep them far away from heat-producing appliances and never leave them unattended” he said.
