A fire at the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s  Landfill site, was contained.

The Municipality’s said the fire started at around 15:30.

It was discovered by a waste collection vehicle, which offloaded a mixture of general and garden waste at the site. 

Some 10 minutes later, municipal officials detected an unusual odor in the vicinity. 

In say another 30 minutes, flames were visible where waste was deposited.

Officials called firefighters, who suppressed the fire successfully.

Preliminary investigations suggest the incident was likely caused by concealed combustible or smoldering material contained within the waste load delivered to the site.

The Municipality used the incident to urge members of the public and businesses, to ensure that hazardous, flammable, or smoldering materials are not disposed of alongside general domestic waste.
