About 8 companies were appointed to provide 1760 Megawatts (MW) of electricity in the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) seventh bid cycle.

Another 8 are to supply battery storage, under the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) bid window 2.

Companies are expected to deliver 5,000 of renewable energy, made up of 1,800 MW of solar PV and 3,200 MW of wind energy.

The 8 companies were appointed from 48 competitive bids submitted.

Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, announced the companies in a media briefing on Monday, the 23rd December 2024.

The 8 are Highveld Solar Consortium (Mpumalanga), Palladium Solar 1 Consortium (Limpopo) , Copper Solar 1 Consortium (Limpopo), Vanadium Solar (Limpopo) Middlepunt Solar PV (Free State) , Mercury Solar PV2 (Free State), Onderstepoort Solar 1 Consortium (North West) and Onderstepoort Solar 2 (North West).

The investment value of the project is R31, 4 billion.
The companies also jointly agreed to spend R73 million of the total investment in enterprise development, R129 million in socio-economic development and R138 million in skills development initiatives.

The Department said it is considering appointing additional compliant bidders in both onshore wind and solar PV.

The 8 companies appointed to provide battery storage, with an investment amount of R12, 8 billion, are Oasis Ararat (North West), Rooikoppies BESS (North West), Mulilo Mercury BESS (Free State), Welverdiend BESS (Gauteng), Hartebeesfontein BESS (Free State), Gainfar Project (Free State), Leeuwpoort (Gauteng) and Boitekong (Free State).
These companies will also jointly invest R1, 8 billion on Black Enterprise Procurement, R1, 4 billion in BBBEE Procurement on Qualifying Small Enterprises and Exempt Micro Enterprises and an additional R659 million on BBBEE targeting black women.
R316 million will go towards skills development bursaries for black students, disabled black people and socio-economic development.
