Temporary bypasses are being built along Meiringspoort between De Rust and Klaarstroom, to allow the N12 to be reopened by early 2027.
About 21km of the N12 through Meiringspoort between De Rust and Klaarstroom, was damaged by floods, in May this year.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure said it will take R486 million, to undertake emergency flood damage repairs.
Work is expected to be completed at the end of October 2028.
The road surface was cleared of flood debris and sand deposits.
The Department also said permanent and temporary repairs to the damaged pavement are underway.
Tertuis Simmers, the Provincial Minister of Infrastructure, said three major new structures are still to be constructed. “Two mechanically stabilised earth walls with stone cladding at near the Groot River; and a new reinforced low-level crossing will be built to replace the damaged culvert over the Gerolms River. About 8.4km of continuously reinforced unbonded concrete pavement will be built and the road will be reconstructed in certain other places.”
