Babalwa Lobishe, Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality met with the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), on Monday.
Issues raised by SAMWU included the use of external legal services in disciplinary processes, review of arbitration awards, Supply Chain Management (SCM) processes, recruitment practices, tools of trade, Metro Trading Services, prolonged suspensions, functionality of the Local Labour Forum (LLF), training budgets, overtime backpay, the Section 154 intervention, filling of vacancies, human settlements grants (USDG/ISUP), absorption of IPTS temporary staff, MBDA and stadium staff alignment, vandalism of municipal facilities, safety of municipal staff, and EPWP recruitment processes.
Lobishe said this engagement reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to continuous consultation, transparency, and collaborative problem-solving.
Last year, SAMWU in the Eastern Cape matched to the Buffalo City Metro Municipality (BCMM) in April, to address unresolved grievances regarding privatization and Expanded Public Worker Program (EPWP) worker exploitation.
Also at the meeting were Advocate Lonwabo Ngoqo, Acting City Manager, Jackson Ngcelwane, Chief Financial Officer, Nosipho Xhego, Executive Director for Corporate Services, and Joseph Tsatsire, Executive Director for Infrastructure and Engineering.
