Johannesburg Water has asked residents of Sandton and Midrand areas to store water, ahead of a planned maintenance of the Palmiet Water system.
The maintenance is expected to affect all areas receiving water from the Palmiet system, including Sandton, Midrand, Klipfontein View, Allandale, President Park, Halfway House, as well as Diepsloot.
Work is expected to kick off on the 25 – 26 January 2025.
Rand Water is planning to repair a leak on the O2 pipeline, and during maintenance, isolate (close) the water supply in order to access and carry out the necessary work.
During this time, residents might receive low pressure to no water supply.
Johannesburg Water’s Nombusa Shabalala said “we will assess the need for alternative water provision over the next week based on its preparations and state of the system. Based on assessments, a plan for alternative water supply (through roaming water tankers and stationary tanks) will be provided in coordination with the respective ward councillors of affected
regions.”
She also said priority for alternative water will be given to schools, clinics, old age homes and retirement homes.
“Malls, hospitals, and medical centers should start planning for their own back-up plans.”
