The eThekwini Municipality is asking residents to  reduce their daily consumption of water.

This follows hiccups, since Sunday, in the supply of water to areas supplied by the Durban Heights reservoir, Wiggins, Hazelmere, Amanzimtoti and Midmar.

Gugu Sisilana, Spokesperson of eThekwini Municipality said the ongoing heatwave and increased demand during the festive season, has placed a strain on the system.

“The strain on our systems is a result of high consumption levels. Several areas, including Savannah Park, Shallcross, Luganda, Nagina, Umlazi, and Mawelewele, will continue to face intermittent water supply due to rapid urbanisation, excessive consumption, and infrastructure challenges such as leaks caused by vandalism and theft” said Sisilana.

She said to address these challenges, work is underway to construct the lower UMkhomazi scheme.

This is an initiative of the National Department of Water and Sanitation, uMngeni-uThukela Water Board and the Municipality.

The lower Umkhomazi scheme is expected to be completed in 2027, to begin supplying water to the South Coast.

“The Upper Umkhomazi scheme is currently at procurement stage, this is a major project that will augment supply to Northern, Southern and Western areas of the city and is due for completion in 2032.
The City is also working on a water reuse project which is due for completion in the year 2028.”
