Alma, Vaalwater, part of both Modimolle and Mookgophong, as well as other areas closeby, were struck by floods on Tuesday. 

Anna Mboweni, Mayor of the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality, went to assess the extent of the damage in affected areas and coordinate relief efforts. 

She said “we extend our concern to all affected residents and assure them that every effort is being made to ensure their safety and well-being. For emergencies, residents are encouraged to contact the municipal call Centre.”

Visitors to and from Kruger National Park were also informed that Orpen Gate is inaccessible due to a collapsed bridge along the R531, near Wits Rural Facility outside the park.

The bridge was washed away by Tuesday’s heavy rains. 

Guests are advised to use alternative gates such as Paul Kruger and Phalaborwa to access or exit the Park until further notice.

Similarly, floods caused extensive damage to property, including roofs, in Mahikeng on Tuesday afternoon.

The Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit, said its teams remain on high alert and are ready to assist.

“Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, secure property, and report any damage or flooding immediately” said an advisory from the Mahikeng Local Municipality.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned severe thunderstorms will continue at Yellow level 4  in the North-West province.

Similar yet lesser conditions, are to persist at Yellow level 2 in Gauteng, eastern parts of the Northern Cape and Limpopo, except in the south-eastern parts.

Northern and central parts of Limpopo could have up to Level 6 of rains on Wednesday.
