Semi-centennial celebrations of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, got underway on Tuesday.

President Cyril Ramaphosa went to honour some of the late heroes at the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Orlando West.

He laid a wreath there, alongside Dada Morero, Mayor City of Johannesburg.

The City said the commemorative event was to “honour the courage, fortitude, and ultimate sacrifices of the historical cohort who fundamentally redirected the trajectory of South Africa’s liberation struggle.”

Youth leaders at the time were Tsietsi Mashinini, Murphy Morobe, Seth Mazibuko, Sibongile Mthembu Mkhabela, Daniel Sechaba Montsitsi, Khotso Seatlholo, Hector Pieterson and Hastings Ndlovu.
