Most young people who sent money home, in 2025, were in Limpopo (63,1%), between the ages of 15 and 25 years.

Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) confirmed remittances were notably higher for households headed by youth aged between 15 and 24 years.

They were as high as 46,9%, and was stated as a source of income.

Youths in Limpopo were followed by those in the Eastern Cape (62%) and Mpumalanga (53,7%).

Researchers found four types of income for youth- salaries and wages, social grants, remittances and income from business.

Remittances is a non-commercial transfer of money sent to support family and households in their home country.

The leadt number of youths sent money to homes in Gauteng (36,4%) and the Western Cape (43,6).

Moreover, Stats SA and SASA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last week, to strengthen data received from young people.

The partnership is expected to help create opportunities for young statisticians and data scientists, ensuring that South Africa continues to develop the skills and expertise needed to support a data-driven economy and society.

The two vowed to work together in research, knowledge exchange, professional development, statistical advocacy, capacity building, and the promotion of professional standards.
