Five schools in Orange Farm in Gauteng, had rooftop solar energy installed on Wednesday.

Each school located at the peri-rural informal township, received  2 × 15kW inverters, 12 × 60kWh batteries and 40 × 620W solar panels to ensure reliable and sustainable power.

The schools are Aha-Thuto Secondary School, Laus Deo Primary, Moyisela Primary and Mphethi Mahlatsi Secondary School.

Funds for the initiative came from the Eskom Development Foundation (ESDEF).

Agnes Mlambo, Acting Group Executive for Distribution at Eskom, said about R146 million was injected into social programmes, to better 1.2 million lives.

The programme is expected to be rolled out nationally and will be funded by Eskom, the Department of Basic Education, and corporate partners.
