Kishugu Joint Venture is deploying a team of more than 200 firefighters and management to the Canadian province of Alberta to assist with firefighting and fire suppression efforts.
This is based on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) South Africa has with Canada, which dates back to 2019.
The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre said this week, there were about 1,000 fires actively burning in Canada.
What is known as the Park Fire, is the biggest, 71,000-acre inferno, in the town of Jasper.
Linton Rensburg, Stakeholder Relations Manager at Working on Fire, said in a statement “our Working on Fire team assembled at Kishugu Training Academy in Mbombela, Mpumalanga on Monday 22 July 2024, for a three-day Training Camp for final preparation prior to departure.”
A team of firefighters and management head to Alberta, Canada today, via a charter arranged by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC).
The deployment period is for 39 days.
