The South African Weather Service’s (SAWS) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems was hacked by cyber criminals, on on Sunday evening, the 26th January 2025.
SAWS said this is the second attack in just two days.
SAWS said its email system and website, which have critical weather information, were affected.
The thieves tampered with information about aviation and marine services.
Fortunately, SAWS said in a statement on Monday, it found alternative ways of disseminating important information, such as weather forecasts.
The SAWS’ ICT service providers have been on site since the attack not only to investigate the breach, but also to explore both interim and long-term ways of restoring the collapsed systems and eventually services.
In the interim, the public is advised to rely on the SAWS’ social media platforms for weather information.
