The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DAFF) has confirmed a seasonal ban of shad (elf), from 01 October until the 30th November, each year.
It is banned to protect breeding, prevent further depletion and recover stocks.
Dr Dion George, the Minister of DAFF, said “we ask all users, to respect the seasonal ban and act as ambassadors for compliance. Protecting shad now ensures future generations, will also enjoy the benefits of this species.”
The Department withdrew the Recreational Fishing Brochure, back in January 2024, but later considered inconsistencies of Annexures 2 and 7, and decided on the two month closure.
