The Western Cape Government announced the closure of Mountain Passes on Sunday, including Swartberg Pass (R328), between Prince Albert and Oudtshoorn, due to dangerous, slippery snow.
The Bainskloof Pass (R301), between Wellington and Wolseley, is also closed, as well as the Du Toitskloof Pass (R101) between Paarl and Worcester and the Grootriver Pass (R102) in Nature’s Valley.
Other closed roads are the Franschhoek Pass (R45) between Franschhoek and Theewaterskloof Dam and the Visserhok Road (M48), which connects Durbanville and the N7.
Similarly, theN9-6 Graaff-Reinet towards Middelburg and the R61/2 Nxuba, are closed due to snowfall in the Lootsberg pass and Wapadsberg pass.
Alternative Routes for motorists travelling from the Western Cape towards middelburg, are the R75/4.
Residents posted videos and pictures on social media platforms as evidence of snowfall in Nieu Bethesda, Middleburg in the Eastern Cape, Beaufort West, on the Swartberg Pass between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert in the Western Cape (NOT the Sneeuberg pass).
It also rained heavily in some parts of the Western and Eastern Cape.
Some areas in George received about 40mm of rainfall, 18mm in Langkloof, 17mm in Kleinmond, Vermont Hermanus, and Jeffrey’s Bay.
Port Elizabeth recorded cold weather, strong winds and rains, as early as Sunday morning.
